Microdermabrasion vs Dermaplaning
2 examples are explained in this article so you can make a smart decision. Microdermabrasion or Dermaplaning is the best choice for you! Healthy and smooth skin! (The process of both are explained first….then the 2 examples which are acne scars & hyperpigmentation)
So….Microdermabrasion vs Dermaplaning, what we have here is two popular skin services that exfoliate your dead skin cells and leave you with glowing skin (warning! you might get some haters because you know some people just gotta hate).
You are headed in the right direction if you get haters!
We will get more in depth about microdermabrasion and Dermaplaning as we move through this article.
I will give you enough knowledge so hopefully whatever lead you to this article is answered.
Let’s dive right in….
Microdermabrasion and Dermaplaning
You really can’t go wrong with either one as both are fantastic for all skin types (unless you have a skin condition that keeps either service from being a good choice).
Let’s start with the….microdermabrasion treatment.
I will lay out the steps for you (just in case you don’t know what they are).
Microdermabrasion steps
Step 1
Skin analysis and a deep cleansing! Gotta get the make-up, oil, and dirt removed from your skin.
Step 2
Your esthetician will start exfoliating your skin with a diamond tip wand (if you are wondering if it’s real diamonds the answer is….Yes! A girls best friend!)
This will remove your dead skin cells and work on those annoying clogged pores.
The diamonds glide over your skin removing your dull skin so your new healthy skin can be revealed (YES, that’s exactly what we want…. our top layer of skin heathy and full of life!)
Step 3
We have the suction wand!
The suction wand sucks away any gunk that is left behind by the diamond tip exfoliating treatment.
All the dead skin, build-up and impurities that’s been having parties in your pores….
Well…..the party is over!
All that mess is now departed your face!
Yes yes yes
The pressure from the suction of the wand stimulates blood circulation in the treated area…..
smoother and brighter skin is the result.
You gotta love it.
Step 4
A mask is applied to calm, hydrate and deliver nutrients your skin needs. You will have healthy skin that….. glows like a thousand stars on a clear night.
Step 5
And the last step is a moisturizer and/or serum is applied to keep your skin hydrated, smooth and vibrant! You are ready to take on the world and show off your new beautiful glowing skin.
Next up…. I will go over the steps of a Dermaplaning treatment.
Dermaplaning treatment
Step 1
Your skin will be analyzed under a magnifying glass to help view any skin conditions you may have (dark spots, uneven skin tone, acne, fine lines, wrinkles, acne scarring and other possible skin issues).
You may not be a good candidate for Dermaplaning if you have certain skin issues(open wounds, cold sores, severe acne)
Step 2
Your skin will be cleansed to remove all excess oil, dirt, make-up and impurities from your skin.
Clean clean clean is what we want.
The sharp surgical blade glides over your skin better when it’s clean.
Step 3
Now that your skin is ready, the derma blading process begins.
With just a little oil on the skin (helps the blade move over your skin) the esthetician will do short, light downward stokes as the skin is held tight.
The blade should be held at a 45 degree angle.
The blade lifts dead skin cells and peach fuzz ( vellus hair) to reveal your shinny new, healthy skin!
Step 4
Do you like facial massages?
Yes!
Great, that’s the next step.
Small circular strokes are performed over your entire face.
Very relaxing and also stimulates blood circulation. Get your glow on!
Step 5
in the final stage a toner, serum and sunscreen will be applied to your skin…..
you are looking like a star!
Now the 2 examples
Hopefully these examples will help you decide which service is better for your particular situation (I understand you may not have these issues, I’m just using them to help stimulate your thought process)
Microdermabrasion vs Dermaplaning for acne scars
We will cover the positives and the negative of microdermabrasion and Dermaplaning involving acne scarring.
Microdermabrasion for acne scars
Positives-Microdermabrasion skin treatment is aggressive which helps reach deeper layers of facial skin. The diamond tip is suited to treat severe types of acne scarring(non invasive yet an aggressive treatment. This service helps even out your skin tone which reduces the visibility of acne scarring that may have been left behind after acne breakouts.
Negatives-The service can help reduce acne scars but cannot permanently erase them. Do you have sensitive skin? If so, microdermabrasion may not be the treatment for you. It works well on most skin types but be aware this is an aggressive treatment so there may be slight discomfort and redness but nothing to worry about.
Dermaplaning for acne scars
Positives: Dermaplaning is a very simple treatment that removes the dead cells on the acne scar. Collagen production will begin which kick starts the natural healing process. This treatment is less aggressive than microdermabrasion. Scars will show improvement!
Negatives: Dermaplaning is a gentle service which makes it less suitable for severe acne scars ( deep pitted scars or raised hypertrophic scars) that will respond better to more aggressive treatments. The shallow scratches by the blade will smooth out your skins surface but cannot reach deep enough to improve deeper scarring. Even though it’s gentle, Dermaplaning can cause skin irritation and redness ( like most treatments……especially if you have sensitive skin).
Conclusion:
As you can see both have their positives & negatives.
It really all comes down to your unique situation, better fit and what you feel more comfortable with.
For example: You have some acne scars that you would like to get a treatment done on.
Are the scars fairly deep (microdermabrasion would be better) or are they not deep at all. Not too deep? You have the choice between both treatments.
What else do you need taken care of?
You have some peach fuzz you would like to get rid of as well (BOOM! Dermaplaning is the better choice) So look at the big picture!
What else would you like to get taken care of while getting a treatment on your scars?
This will lead you to your answer.
Oh, apply sunscreen (if your esthetician doesn’t do it) because your skin is new and healthy and we want to keep it that way.
UV rays from the sun will damage you skin!
Next up we have….microdermabrasion vs Dermaplaning for hyperpigmentation
Microdermabrasion for Hyperpigmentation
Positives: Microdermabrasion is an effective option to reduce hyperpigmentation. The diamond tip peels away the top layer of skin to reveal a smoother more even complexion. The natural healing process will start and collagen is produced. Works well on more severe cases of hyperpigmentation. Your skin will look radiant!
negatives: Darker skin tones may experience post treatment hypopigmentation(skin lightens from the exfoliation process).Consult a professional and don’t try this treatment at home. Another downside is it can be painful for some people (especially if you have sensitive skin) and there may be some redness and skin irritation but that’s normal.
Dermaplaning for Hyperpigmentation
Positives: Dermaplaning is a gentle exfoliating treatment. Removing the top layer of skin will help with evening out your hyperpigmentation. Just like above the natural healing process will start after the exfoliation and new collagen will be produced. Your skin will look healthier, smoother and brighter!
Negative: For severe cases of hyperpigmentation Dermaplaning may not be as effective. Like most treatments, irritation and redness may occur (especially if you have sensitive skin). Because the top layer of skin is being peeled off you may be at risk of sensitivity to the sun (same issue with microdermabrasion) so make sure you apply sunscreen.
Conclusion:
Microdermabrasion and Dermaplaning are effective at evening out your skin tone but like most everything…
it all comes down to your unique situation.
Let’s go through a couple situations.
Let’s say your skin condition is not that bad and you notice some unwanted peach fuzz(vellus hair) on your face that you would like removed.
Ding ding ding……the best decision is getting a Dermaplaning (shaves off peach fuzz as well) treatment.
Next scenario….. your hyperpigmentation is fairly severe and you have some blemishes.
Bingo!
Microdermabrasion is a better choice as it’s more suited for more severe hyperpigmentation and works well on blemishes!
Pulling all this together we have a few different scenarios for both Microdermabrasion and Dermaplaning and both deliver great results on all skin types but neither is the best at everything.
Again, apply sunscreen (if your esthetician doesn’t do it) because your skin is new and healthy and we want to keep it that way.
UV rays from the sun will damage you skin!
Now I will close with some final thoughts
Final thoughts:
I really should mention some benefits about both. The list is…
- Exfoliate (Bye bye dull skin)
- Collagen production (Healthy new skin)
- No recovery time needed (unlike chemical peel)
- smooth skin
- More even complexion
- you will have beautiful glowing skin (others will be jealous)
Now I will end this article with this… Microdermabrasion and Dermaplaning are amazing treatments that will help you get the skin of your dreams! You now have the knowledge to make a smart decision that will be the best choice based on your own unique skin needs. With each treatment comes a difference in results so choose wisely!
Oh, Just in case you missed it above (I know people skip around in articles, I’m just like you) please apply sunscreen (if your esthetician doesn’t do it) because your skin is new and healthy and we want to keep it that way.
UV rays from the sun will damage you skin!
Happy Skin journey!
